Why this career matters

This is the trade nobody talks about. Elevator mechanics can earn a strong living with full union benefits, pension, and overtime. The IUEC apprenticeship pays you from day one while you learn. Elevators are everywhere and always need maintenance, so the work never stops. And as buildings get taller and smarter, the technology is getting more sophisticated, not less.

What you actually do

1
Install new elevator systems in buildings under construction
2
Perform scheduled maintenance on motors, cables, and control systems
3
Troubleshoot and repair breakdowns using diagnostic tools
4
Modernize older elevator systems with new technology
5
Inspect safety devices and ensure code compliance
6
Read electrical schematics and hydraulic diagrams

A day in the life

Morning: arrive at a downtown high-rise for a scheduled maintenance call. Open the machine room, check the motor, test the governor, grease the guide rails. Midday: get dispatched to an emergency: an elevator stuck between floors at a hospital. Diagnose a faulty encoder, replace it, test the system. Afternoon: back to the shop for parts inventory and paperwork. Every day is different, the work is physical and technical, and you're solving real problems that affect thousands of people.
